VA Referendum Vote:  Temporary Redistricting

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy.  It is a right that we must always safeguard. President Trump directed numerous Republican states across the country to draw new congressional maps. In response, Virginia's General Assembly voted to give its citizens the opportunity to make their own decision about congressional maps through the April 21 referendum.

This is a temporary measure to give Virginians a crucial voice, not a PERMANENT change. Proposed maps are available to review. Voting gives every citizen a voice. This TEMPORARY exception meets the current needs of the moment, while preserving Virginia's independent redistricting process.

• Early voting began in Virginia on March 6, 2026.

• Election day is April 21st.

3.Ensures Voters have the Power to Decide, Not Politicians
Unlike Texas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio, where redistricting decisions were made without voter consent, Virginia puts the decision to redistrict directly in the hands of voters. It is a declaration that political power should flow from the people.

4.Expires in 2030, Only a Temporary Measure for Unusual Times
The Amendment provides for the use of emergency temporary congressional maps until after the 2030 census when the Virginia Independent Redistricting Commission will do its regular redistricting job.

When and Where to Vote:

ALL REGISTERED VOTERS IN VIRGINIA MAY VOTE EARLY, EITHER IN PERSON OR BY MAIL.

Mail:  Request a ballot by 5:00 p.m. on April 10 at elections.virginia.gov/absentee.

You may return your ballot:

• By mail: postmarked on or before Tuesday, April 21 and received by noon on Friday, April 24.

• Before Election Day: to your voter registration office, drop-off location, or satellite location.

• On Election Day (by 7 p.m.): your voter registration office, any polling place, or drop-off location.
